Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major)
Status at Longham Lakes
Fairly common resident in the woods.
First recorded 3rd September 2003.
Highest count: 3 on 6th November 2009.
Breeding:
Male and female seen together on 17th March 2011 (Trevor Thorpe).
2012: Male with brood patch ringed on 16th May (Roger Peart).
2014: Breeding confirmed on 18th April in Samuel’s Wood (George Green).
2015: Heard drumming on 22nd January.
2016: Two territories were held, with one confirmed active nest on the banks of the River Stour south
of Samuel’s Wood (Steve Morrison).
Ringing:
2012: 3 ringed, 1 each in May, July and August.
2013: 1 ringed on 17th May.
2012: 3 ringed, 1 each in May, July and August.
2013: 1 ringed on 17th May.
