Common Starling (Sturnus vulgaris)
Status at Longham Lakes
Common resident, seen on most visits. Breeds in the immediate vicinity, but its breeding status on-site is not yet certain.
High counts:
1. 50 on 19th August 2002.
2. 15 on 21st November 2004.
3. 90 on the side of the Quarry on 24th May 2006; adults with fledglings.
4. 80 on 16th September 2007 (Chris Parnell).
5. 200 on 15th December 2009.
Migrants (?):
1. 390 flew W between 07.40 and 08.12 on 27th October 2006.
Breeding:
2011: 50 adults and juveniles on the horse paddocks, 9th July (Trevor Thorpe).
2012: A pair collecting food on the horse paddocks, 20 April.
2014: 1 territory in Samuel’s Wood. Others in houses on site.
2015: Juvenile seen on the early date on 14th May.
2016: 4 juveniles on 11th May (Trevor Wilkinson).
