Northern Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus)
Status at Longham Lakes
A regular winter visitor which has attempted to breed.
Breeding:
1. At least 4 pairs held territory on the partially flooded Quarry in April-May 2007, but any success they might have enjoyed was destroyed by workings.
2. 2 pairs held territory in 2008.
3. 2 pairs held territory. Small chick seen on 28th May 2009 (Trevor Thorpe).
4. 2 adults were with 3 well-grown chicks on Hampreston Fields on 24th July 2016 (Trevor Thorpe).
Wintering:
There are plenty of Lapwings wintering locally, and sometimes they visit the Lakes in large numbers. The flooded Quarry proved irresistible to these birds in winter 2006/07-2009/10, with a high count of 80 on 13th January 2007, and then the remarkable record of 166 on 13th February 2009, during a time of snow and frost.
