Monday 17th September
There was some light visible migration over Longham this morning 09.00-09.50, with totals as follows: Siskin 5, Lesser Redpoll 2 (south), Chaffinch 5 (south), Greenfinch 11 (south), Goldfinch 30 (mainly south), Linnet 17 (south), Pied/White Wagtail 5, Skylark 2, Reed Bunting 3, Meadow Pipit 2, Song Thrush 1. However, the big surprise came as a distant voice from the bushes on the edge of Hampreston Fields and close to the Stour – a singing Cetti’s Warbler. This was the first of the year, after the cold winter had killed off our two resident males; the last record before this was on 9th September 2010. I heard it again later close to Samuel’s Wood. It’s good to have this species back.
Other good birds today: 1 Peregrine, 1 Redwing, 3 Goldcrests, 1 Whinchat, 3+ Stonechats.
